British Columbia does not award a forklift licence from the government and WorkSafeBC states that no operators must be “certified” in the forklift licence sense. Rather, workers are required to be trained to meet the CSA standard for industrial lift truck operator training and to complete a test to be allowed to operate a lift truck. At least every three years, they are required to be trained in an upgrade. For the purposes of this practice, the term “forklift certification renewal” refers to the renewal of a forklift license in BC. It is the employer's duty to ensure that drivers are adequately trained and supervised. For operators and employers, Mainland Safety Training provides forklift training for BC workplaces and can help keep you up-to-date. Call (604) 617-0211.

If you are a forklift operator in BC, you've likely been told that your certificate “expires” at the end of 3 years. This is a good general idea but there are some specifics we can share that are not included in the above. This guide will outline what BC actually needs, who is responsible, and how to get it done without any gaps.

Is Forklift Certification Required in BC?

Not like a driver's licence. WorkSafeBC states that no certification is required for workers to operate a forklift, but workers must be trained to CSA standards and complete a test before operating a lift truck. This is the Industrial Lift Truck Operator Training standard, CSA B335.

There will be no provincial forklift licence to renew that means. The proof of training will be in the form of a certificate or card from your training provider or your employer.

How Often Does Forklift Training Need to Be Renewed in BC?

WorkSafeBC says that workers are required to receive upgrade training at least every three years – as required by the CSA standard. This gives rise to the well known three-year renewal cycle.

Most trainers are going to provide a certificate indicating the date of training and, frequently, a 3-year expiration date. When it expires, it is usually necessary to take refresher training in order to operate a forklift. Ask your employer if they need a full course or an "upgrade.

Who Is Responsible for Forklift Training?

Employers. Employers must ensure drivers are adequately trained and provide extra training and supervision where necessary. Training can be provided by an employer or a third party.

This will mean that:

  • In many cases, an operator won’t receive sufficient training. Many employers will want to re-assess operators on their own equipment and site.
  • Training records should be kept including date of training, who trained them and what equipment they were trained on.
  • The certificate should be requested each time.

What Does Renewal Training Cover?

This will depend on your provider however a quality refresher course will cover:

  • Forklift safety regulations and common causes of incidents
  • Pre-use checks
  • Carrying loads and vehicle stability
  • Safety working with pedestrians and hazards in the workplace
  • Written test
  • Practical assessment on the equipment you will be using

If you operate more than one type of lift truck, such as counterbalance, reach truck, or pallet jack, ask whether your training covers each one.

When You Might Need Training Sooner

You should only consider refreshing your training at your employer after 3 years. If you have any of the following situations:

  • Moved to a different type of forklift or attachment.
  • Not used forklifts for a long period of time.
  • Had an incident or near miss.
  • Your workplace layout/traffic has changed considerably.
  • A supervisor has noticed unsafe practices.

Propane: A Separate Requirement

If you’re a forklift driver and need to move propane to refuel your vehicle then you will also need a propane handler certificate. However, if your work only involves changing cylinders, then you won’t need a certificate. (WorkSafeBC)

How to Renew Your Forklift Training: Step by Step

  1. Check your certificate date. Look for the training date and the renewal date. Book at least a few weeks before it lapses.
  2. Ask your employer what they require. Some will specify a provider or course length.
  3. Choose a provider that trains to the CSA standard and includes a written test and practical evaluation.
  4. Attend the course and bring any ID or documents the provider asks for.
  5. Keep your new certificate and give a copy to your employer.
