Course Overview:

BASICS.fst® is a food safety training course for food handlers. The course will help workers learn important information about food safety. It will help them to do their job better.

Who Should Take the Course?

Any person who works with food should study BASICS.fst® – from the person that receives the food to the person who packages or serves the food.

Course Objectives:

The primary objective of this food safety course is to provide participants with the information required to insure employee and customer safety, and to reduce the liability of businesses.


This course is presented in 13 units:

  • A Closer Look at Micro-organisms
  • The Flow of Food and Facilities Design
  • Personal Hygiene in the Danger Zone
  • Cleaning and Sanitizing
  • Purchasing, Receiving and Storing Food
  • Getting Food Ready to Cook
  • Handling Dishes and Serving Food
  • Keep Food at the Right Temperature
  • Reduce the Amount of Time that Food is in the Danger Zone
  • Cooking, Cooling and Holding Food
  • Food Allergies
  • Food Safety Regulations


Food Safety Experts are available to answer any questions on the unit content, and can be reached with a click of the “Ask the Expert” button throughout the course.

Evaluation Process:

At the end of each unit there is a unit test. Participants must pass this unit test with 100% before they can proceed to the next unit. If a participant does not score 100% they can review the unit and attempt the test again. 


Please note, this access is only available for 30 days after activation has been initialized. Once the online course is completed, a completion confirmation record (sample attached) will become available to the participant in their log in profile. The participant must either print a hard copy or show this completion confirmation record using their own mobile device to the invigilator (testing administrator) prior to sitting the exam.


When the participant is ready to do the in-person class exam, please contact us at least 72 hours in advance. All participants must show their completion record from the online training, as well as a pen, a pencil and one piece of Government Issued photo identification with them to the exam. 


The exam will include 50 multiple choice questions. The exam writer will need a minimum of 75% to pass this course and will have 60 minutes to complete the test.


Once the exam has been written, we will ship it to our Toronto Head Office (within 24 hours) to be marked. This usually takes approximately 2 weeks to process, and then our Toronto Head Office will send us the certificate for passing participants. Please note that the entire process takes 4 weeks from writing the test to getting the certificate. The invigilator cannot tell the participant on the day of the exam whether or not they have passed the course.


A passing score of 75% is required to receive a BASICS.fst® certificate.

Course Duration:

This online course is self paced. Participants may leave the course at any time and can resume where they left off. The duration will depend on the individual participant and their prior knowledge of the subject matter.
